Its been many years now that I have to suffer waking up with bad back pain, and I’d like to know what I can do (note that it does fade after a fair bit of time). I’ll spare going into detail about my history with this, but suffice it to say I cannot afford a new mattress right now, and I could just use some tips or tricks or stretches I can do before I go to bed that can help. Does anyone know what can be done?

You do need a better mattress but until you can afford one you can try turning your mattress over and switch the bottom to the top also put a sheet of plywood under your mattress to give it more support for your back.
When we sleep our muscles tend to stiffen up due to being inactive so we need the support to prevent it.
Sleep without pilow will help U more better. And always keep your back straght
Try a foam thing to put on top of your mattress. I finally convinced my boyfriend to do it to his mattress and his back pain is becoming less frequent and when it does happen its not as bad a before so he says. There real cheap you can get one at walmart for less than $20
Ok I have got a tip for you – Flip your mattress over onto it’s other side, then once you have done that pick up the top end of the mattress and turn it around so it is facing the bottom of your bed post, So flip it over then turn it around, This will give you more support on your back,
Anther great thing to use is a devise called a "Inversion Table" You can check it out on youtube, It is very well worth investing in, Very good for bad backs.
But for the mean time a Cream called "Deep Heat Rub" is well worth using, along with taking ibuprofen.
Well i noticed that i was also waking up with back pain like everyday, and i found out it was because i sleep with my arms under my pillow, above my head, which made my shoulder muscles contracting all night. So when i slept with my arms by my side then it actually relieved my pain almost completely. i’m not sure what kind of back pain you have, but that helped me, sorry if this doesn’t help. ^_^
